Climate issues have never had a higher profile. Many people are becoming aware of livestock draining our natural resources and contributing a massive amount of damaging gasses to the atmosphere. Add to this the energy required to grow out-of-season food and transport it across the world and you can see why local, seasonal plants are the obvious environmental choice.
Nature supports our health with what we need at certain times of the year, for example, citrus fruits provide vitamin C in winter when we might get colds and flu. By alternating our diets with natural cycles we cover all the vitamins and minerals our body needs.
Animal welfare is at the heart of Savouring Seasons. We totally reject industrial techniques that cause physical, mental and emotional harm to animals. This is why our recipes contain no animal products and we advocate a vegan lifestyle. You don’t need to be vegan to enjoy our recipes though: you’ll find many tasty ways to cut down on meaty meals.
Placing the tastes and smells of the season at the centre of your diet gives you a visceral link to the current moment and your immediate environment. Savour the flavour of a tomato in summer, and sweet potato in winter.
Locally grown seasonal food is abundant and cheaper. Only little energy goes to vegetables grown under the sun and transported to a nearby market. Even if an imported product might cost less money there are other costs to the environment and your local economy.
Each region, climate zone and culture produce different crops at different times. The recipes we publish relate to us living in Rome, but, of course, will not apply to everyone everywhere at the time.
We don’t say world trade is to be avoided but that it’s important to live in a more harmonious way. Certain foods don’t apply… grains, beans, legumes, herbs and spices can be bought dried and stored for long periods of time.
